Think of a crime scene, where two robbers keep 4 hostages in captivity, and police are trying to apprehend the criminals without harming the hostages; therefore, police wait for the criminals to release the hostages. Now, the real question dashes over, who is guilty in this case? Almost every sane person would absolutely say robbers are guilty because everything indicates them; however, the hostages said otherwise.
After 6 days, police finally got into the Bank, where the hostages were cooped up. They kept the robbers under surveillance and took the 4 women, the hostages, for an inquiry. Naturally, they expected the women to say what everyone saw: the men were guilty. Yet, what happened was utterly different. Instead, the women severely condemned the police's idea that the robbers were guilty. They insisted that the men were innocent, and all they wanted was to get out of the Bank, but they couldn't because the police would not let them go, therefore saying the police were the real culprit.
Now, this may seem like a made-up story; however, this did happen in 1973 and gave the name to the Stockholm Syndrome, which the women were experiencing.
Basically put: The victims, whose freedom has been seized from them by the culprit, become engulfed by such a great fear that the only thing they can think of at that moment is to survive, as the victim dwindles with this great trepidation, even the most petite good-act of the culprits make the wicked person seem like a Saint in the victim's eyes.
Does this syndrome happens so often?
The syndrome does not occur so frequently: according to FBI, about 8% of hostage victims shows the symptoms of Stockholm syndrome. To specify, it is mostly seen in cases such as :
Being abducted, domestic violation, sexual harassment to children , and religious cults.
It is highly possible to see it in even movies; for instance, the Beauty and the Beast is the most famous among them: most of us know this story and are well aware that the Beast kept Belle in captivity before they fell in love...
